Best Album Cover Extravangza Part 2

2. For this one, we gotta go the classic death metal route, and who better than the band Death. Death need no introduction, but for those unschooled ones out there, they were a pioneering death metal band. While having a plethora of lineup changes, the one constant was Chuck Schulinder who sadly passed away in 2001. Great stuff, their later shit is more technical and a precursor to bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, their early stuff is more primitive, but incredibly "brutal". This is the cover of Spiritual Healing. This album is kind of a stopgap between those sounds. It came out in '89, at the height of all the televangelist scandals. (Jim and Tammy Faye, Jimmy Swaggart, etc.) The artist is Ed Repka who was responsible for many metal covers, (including the classic Megadeth ones). I love the look on the cancer guy's face. Also, Death's logo is definitely so cliched its good.

3. Next, there's more metal. Iron Maiden's Somewhere in Time, This cover is one of my favorites, although I have never actually listened to it. When I was a kid, my brother had the shirt, which I was always fascinated with. The level of detail is amazing, that coupled with the Bladerunner vibe is dope. Thats one thing that is missing from cover art these days, 80's metal covers had a comic book quality which I dig. All of Iron Maiden's covers are dope, but this my fav.

4. Ol Dirty Bastard Return to 36 Chambers (The Dirty Version) Here is a classic, which needs no explanation. Everything about ODB is summed up.

5. RZA as Bobby Digital In Stereo The artist is Bill Sienkiewicz, who is one of my favorite comic book artists. His style is different, a little more abstract. Check out more of his work, anyway this cover combines the aforementioned comic vibe with some blaxploitation, and scifi. All in all, a great cover, although the album is a little ho-hum. There are still some great tracks.
